AI Traffic Is Small but Different in Kind

IN ONE SENTENCE
AI referrals are still around 1% of traffic and growing 357% year over year — presenting either figure alone distorts it.
Two things hold at once: AI referral volume is still small in absolute terms (cross-site studies average around 1% of traffic) and growing fast (up 357% year over year in June 2025). Presenting either side alone distorts it.
OUR POSITION
Do not present this as a multiple. Off a tiny base, multiples look impressive and persuade no one. Absolute numbers plus share of enquiries is the version that holds up.
Volume and growth
Volume: cross-site work (Conductor, 13,770 domains) averages around 1% of total site traffic.
Growth: on Similarweb's measure, AI platforms sent 1.13 billion referrals to the global top 1,000 sites in June 2025, up 357% year over year — against 191 billion from Google Search.
Give both figures together. Growth alone overstates present value; volume alone understates the trend.
Where the 'converts better' research disagrees
Studies agree on direction and diverge sharply on magnitude: one values AI visitors at 4.4× organic, while a statistical analysis found no significant overall difference (p=0.794), with B2B sites doing slightly better on AI traffic.
Methodology explains the gap: conversion definitions, industries and site samples all differ, so these numbers do not corroborate each other.
The defensible phrasing is that it is worth watching separately — not that it converts some specific multiple better.
A defensible way to present it
Give absolutes: how many visits and how many enquiries the AI channel produced this month.
Give the share: what proportion of all enquiries that represents. That says more about commercial value than referral volume does.
Give the indirect path: movement in branded search and direct traffic — people who found you after seeing the brand in an answer carry no referrer but are still a result.
⚠️ No multiples, and no comparisons against an 'industry average' — those definitions almost never reconcile.
