Communities Need Genuine Participation, Not Placement

IN ONE SENTENCE
Communities are the highest-weight source type and the least suited to a placement approach — promotional posting gets identified and undermines the credibility you are trying to build.
Community content carries heavy weight in AI citations: Semrush's June 2025 analysis of 150,000+ citations put Reddit at 40.1%. It is also the source type least suited to a placement mindset — promotional posting gets identified and directly contradicts the goal of being treated as credible.
OUR POSITION
This is the hardest piece to outsource, because it requires sustained participation with real expertise rather than a publishing action. If nobody will participate under their own name over time, the correct decision is not to do it — not to hire someone to post.
How much weight, and that it moves
Semrush, June 2025: Reddit 40.1%, Wikipedia 26.3%, YouTube 23.5%.
Reporting in early 2026 put YouTube ahead of Reddit as the leading social citation source, with sharp platform divergence — Google's AI summaries still lean on Reddit while others weight differently. Re-assess the source list quarterly.
A workable participation standard
Answer more than you post. The value comes from useful, specific answers under other people's questions, not from publishing your own material.
Expertise before links. A link is supporting material for an answer, not the answer.
Be identifiable. Participating under a real name and affiliation fits community rules better than anonymous promotion and builds entity recognition at the same time.
How to decide whether to do it at all
Ask one question: does anyone on the team already discuss this subject in those communities? If yes, this works. If no, do not force it.
The cost of promotional posting is not only removal — it ties the brand to marketing-account behaviour, after which genuine participation is harder to get accepted.
