Internal Links Are Designed, Not Added Ad Hoc

In the main luminous branching framework, small branches connected to the main glow, while unconnected ones are dim, symbolizing internal links as paths connecting pages and transferring weight
Internal links must both enable crawlers to traverse all pages and express concept relationships; sitemaps alone are insufficient

IN ONE SENTENCE

Internal links solve two things at once: reachability from any entry point, and expressing how concepts relate.

Internal links do two things: let a crawler reach every page from any entry point, and express relationships between concepts. The first is reachability, the second is semantics, and a sitemap substitutes for neither.

OUR POSITION

Declaring pages in a sitemap is not enough. A sitemap is an inventory; links are the paths. A page that exists only in the inventory, with nothing linking to it, gets lower authority and lower crawl priority.

01

Two rules you can act on

At least one same-category exit and one cross-category exit per page. The first keeps the reader inside the subject; the second expresses how subjects relate.

Write anchor text as the target page's actual subject, not 'click here' or 'learn more'. Anchor text is itself a relationship signal.

02

One self-check

List every page, subtract those linked from at least one other page — what remains are orphans, reachable only from the sitemap and crawled at lower priority.

Then check the reverse: are there pages whose only entry point is a single other page? A single entry means one problem there cuts off the whole section.

03

Relationship to content clusters

The cluster is the unit of link design: the hub links to every detail page, and detail pages link to each other and back to the hub.

Keep cross-cluster links few and deliberate — each one asserts that two subjects are related, and overuse makes that assertion meaningless.
