Position Bands Decide Priority

Ten equally sized luminous vertical reservoirs; the first ten merge via wide outlets into a dense main stream, while smaller reservoirs beyond have faint trickles, representing top 10 ranked keywords capturing most clicks
Nearly all category revenue comes from top 10 rankings; entering top 10 is far more important than creating more pages

IN ONE SENTENCE

Beyond position 11, a keyword returns about 0.1 clicks a month — nearly all yield in this category sits in the top ten.

Our keyword-level analysis of 4,074 non-branded keywords for a leading site in this category: roughly 13.1 monthly clicks per keyword at positions 1–3, 3.4 at 4–10, 0.1 at 11–20, near zero beyond 21. Almost all yield sits in the top ten.

OUR POSITION

So the first test for a topic is whether we can reach the top ten for it, not how much volume it has. Twenty pages a week that all reach the top ten beat two hundred that rank past thirty.

01

How yield distributes

Positions 1–3: about 13.1 monthly clicks per keyword. 4–10: 3.4. 11–20: 0.1. Beyond 21: near zero.

In aggregate: the 2,770 keywords ranking past position 11 returned 43 clicks in total. Those pages contribute almost nothing to traffic while consuming crawl budget and internal authority.

02

What it means for topics and volume

Filter topics by difficulty: prioritise the band you can actually reach the top ten in, not the band with the most volume.

Set volume from topic space, not from a monthly target. Forcing volume beyond the available topics produces thin rephrasing that neither ranks nor pays for itself.

The Princeton equaliser effect points the same way: pages around position five gained most (+115.1%) while first-ranked pages lost 30.3% on average. Concentrate effort on the pages that are close to breaking into the top ten.

03

What review should read

Movement between bands: how many pages moved from 11–20 into 4–10 this period, and how many from 4–10 into 1–3.

Not decimals in an average. An average position improving from 24 to 19 makes no business difference — both sit in a band that returns nothing.
